Abubakar Abdelbagi

PhD student

Abubakar holds a Master’s degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Al Neelain University in Sudan. He has gained valuable experience as a research assistant, including time in the lab of Joanna Rohrbach at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden, where he developed expertise in mitochondrial biochemistry, particularly in relation to mitochondrially encoded proteins. Abubakar joined our lab as a PhD student in May 2025.

His research focuses on proteostatic responses to protein aggregation within inner mitochondrial compartments. He is developing cellular models and reporter systems to study these responses and employs unbiased screening approaches to map the proteostatic landscape involved. His core methodologies include advanced cloning and genetic engineering techniques, confocal fluorescence microscopy, and flow cytometry.
