Dive into the Science of the Kohler Mito Lab

A Masterpiece of Evolution - Background

Mitochondria are the molecular foundation of all oxygen-consuming life on Earth. These fascinating organelles are derived as so-called endosymbionts and contain their own DNA. Find out more about these evolutionary masterpieces and become a Mitochondriac! View

Our Projects

Project 1 Kohler Mito Lab, Andreas Kohler
  • In this project, we employ genome-wide screens to uncover new components and regulators involved in the quality control of mitochondrially-encoded proteins. Following this, we examine the spatiotemporal organization of these systems and unravel the molecular principles underlying their function.

Project 2 Kohler Mito Lab, Andreas Kohler
  • Ageing is an intricate biological process that significantly influences human health and, by extension, society. In this project, we conduct ageing experiments to understand how mitochondrial protein quality control evolves during ageing, and conversely, how this system impacts cellular health as ageing progresses.

Project 3 Kohler Mito Lab, Andreas Kohler
  • Parkinson’s disease, the second most common neurodegenerative disease globally, affects over 8 million people. In this project, we operate under the primary hypothesis that alterations in mitochondrial protein biosynthesis serve as a critical onset point for pathological changes in Parkinson’s disease. We delve into the molecular underpinnings of these processes to further our understanding.
